Unclaimed Capital Credits
Tri-County REC returns $709,674 in capital credits to both current and former members of the electric cooperative, marking the conclusion of the 2023 fiscal year. Being a member of Tri-County REC offers more than just access to competitively priced electricity; it also grants ownership in the cooperative, ensuring that members have a say in its operations through elected board directors and a share in the cooperative’s profits.
During the September board meeting, the Tri-County Board of Directors made the decision to retire capital credits that were allocated to members’ accounts in 1991, 1992, and 2022. Current members who were served by the cooperative during these retirement years would have noticed a bill credit reflected on their December statement. Inactive members who were entitled to a credit but have since moved from the co-op’s service area were issued paper checks, which were mailed on December 18. We kindly request your assistance in notifying any inactive members who may have unclaimed capital credits. Capital credits serve as a reflection of the margins or profits that the cooperative achieves at the end of each year. As cooperatives are owned by their members, these margins are redistributed back to members in the form of capital credits. The amount allocated to each member’s account is based on their energy consumption during the corresponding retirement years. The cooperative retains these margins as working capital to support plant replacement, as well as the construction and maintenance of the electric system. Whenever the co-op is financially able, it retires these margins by returning capital credits, also known as patronage capital, to its members.
Since 2010, the cooperative has successfully returned over $12 million in capital credits to its members, and out of the last 13 years, capital credits have been retired in 12 of them.
